After the stir and strong response raised by the regenerative medicine lecture at the 15th Asian Surgical and Plastic Conference in July this year, the academic position and influence of regenerative medicine was apparently promoted in Asian-Pacific region, especially in Malaysia. In order to further spread the application of regenerative medicine in Malaysia with the exertion of its academic superiority, the third round medical development in Malaysia was well unfolded from Oct 10th to 29th, 2010 and achieved good results noticeably. During the 20 days, two classes of provincial training and sever classes of hospital training were subsequently hold with more than 580 medical staff in burn, plastic, general surgery, orthopedics, internal medicine participating; five hospitals that have been using the MEBT/MEBO were visited to extensively improve their manipulation; four new large-scale governmental hospitals and one university hospital began to use MEBT/MEBO; the treatments of more than 30 severe cases were given the clinical consultation and direction, including 7 burn cases (2 extremely severe cases), 13 chronic ulcer cases, 1 with integumentary disorder and etc.
1. At 7:30 on Oct 11th, 2010, Prof. Chen Yongchong, from China National Scientific and Technical Center for Burns, Wounds and Ulcers and Ms. Ling Shin Chew, the one responsible for the MEBO academic popularization and medical development in Malaysia came the surgical ward of UMMC hospital to make the consultation and direct the treatments of three cases with extreme burn by the request of Dr. Margaret, the supervisor of burn unit of UMMC hospital. The purpose of improving the application of MEBT/MEBO was attained.
At 1 pm, after the end of busy ward round and case discussion, Prof. Chen was invited to introduce the application of MEBT/MEBO in the treatment of traumatic injuries and refractory wounds and the standard procedures of MEBT/MEBO to more than 30 orthopedic professors and surgeons in the meeting room of orthopedic unit of UMMC. The introduction raised dense interests from the participants and was warmly welcomed. After that, several orthopedic surgeons immediately applied MEBT/MEBO to treat diabetic foot ulcers and orthopedic refractory wounds. It was realized that different units in the same hospital had started to use MEBT/MEBO.
2. On Oct 12th, Prof. Chen was once again invited to guide the treatment of extreme burn cases in HKL (the biggest hospital in Malaysia). After the demonstration of MEBT/MEBO procedures and the guidance of treatment, Prof. Chen organized the case discussion in the unit and conducted the training of systemic therapy in large area burns that extensively improved the rescuing ability and level of patient with large area burn in the next phase.
3. On Oct 13th, Dr. Salina gave another invitation to Prof. Chen who directed the clinical treatments of 7 tough cases at burn unit of Hospital Sg Buloh (as the core hospital of MEBO in Malaysia). This can be thought as an effective academic activity to the improvement of the application of MEBT/MEBO in core hospital.
4. At the morning of Oct 14th, Prof. Chen was invited to conduct the consultation and organize the case discussion for an infant with large area burn in burn center of HUKM. During the discussion, Prof. Chen gave a simple introduction about Burn Regenerative Medicine and Therapy for Dr. Faizal, director of burn center and other physicians and nurses in the hope that makes participants understand some preliminary knowledge before providing the therapeutic suggestions and opinions for the infant.
As the dense interest of physicians to regenerative medicine was raised by the infant case discussion, on Oct 21st, Prof. Chen was once again invited to the surgical meeting room of HUKM. In order to better understand and learn MEBT/MEBO, more than 50 mainstay physicians and nurses in burn, trauma and orthopedic uints were given the training of clinical application of MEBT/MEBO. After the theoretical training, Prof. Chen also conducted case discussion in association with the clinics and demonstrated the standard procedures of dressing-change with MEBT/MEBO. After that, all participants thought that theories of MEBT/MEBO are advanced with simple procedures and practicality and decided to apply this method to treat patients with burn, wounds and ulcers right away.
5. On Oct 15th, Prof. Chen and Ms. Ling Shin were invited to conduct the clinical guidance and discuss to draw up the clinical study program of severed finger treatment in Sultanah General Hospital (the biggest hospital in Sultanah) on invitation by Dr. Thevarajan (Director of Orthopedic unit of this hospital). It was a busy day. At 8 am, just as the Prof. Chen’s arrival, several clients (6 severed finger clients, 3 clients with traumatic injury) were waiting at orthopedic outpatient; Prof. Chen meticulously inspected the wound, provided his guidance and corrected some faults that did not fulfill the standard procedures in the therapeutic process. Then, by the invitation of Dr. Yong, Prof. Chen came to the orthopedic unit to make the consultation to an infant with open fracture an severe traumatic soft tissue defects, the infant’s families felt satisfactory to the effects of MEBT/MEBO. After that, Prof. Chen, Dr. Thevarajan, Dr. Yiong Aik Peng and Ms. Ling Shin jointly discussed to solve some detailed problems in the clinical study subject called ‘A Large Sample Randomized Open-labeled Clinical Comparative Study on the Efficacy and Safety of Topically Applied Moist ExposedBurn Ointment (MEBO) and Opsite in Subjects with Finger Injuries’, then submitted it to Malaysian National Medical Clinical Research Center online and obtained the permission as one national program of clinical research and began to implement.
6. At 9am, on Oct 17th, state-range training class of regenerative medicine (one project of Kuala Terenggganu State medicine continue education) was successfully opened at auditorium in Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (with 1100 beds). More than 100 medical staff from more than 10 hospitals of the cities in Kuala Terengggunu State attended this training class. First of all, a short open ceremony was hosted by Dr Azliza, Dr Ahmad Tajuddin-Director of trauma and orthopedic department gave speech of welcoming and introduced the experts that would give lectures. After that, Prof. Chen Yongchong lectured with the topic ‘The clinical standard application of MEBT/MEBO in the treatment of burns, wounds and ulcers’. Then, Dr Colin-surgeon of orthopedic department gave a lecture called ‘The clinical applicant report of MEBT/MEBO in my hospital’ that described the amazing effects of MEBT/MEBO in treating 37 cases with orthopedic wounds and his own applicant experience. All participants satisfied with the training contents.
At 2pm, we came back to the auditorium after lunch to inspect the demonstration of MEBT. There were four cases (one was in-patient client, three were out-patient clients) with refractory wounds after suffering from open fracture, incurable donate site with infection and the incurable wound with soft tissue infection. Prof. Chen demonstrated the procedures of MEBT with explanation. All participants intuitively learned and manipulated the procedures of MEBT in dressing-change.
7. On Oct 18th, state-range training class of regenerative medicine (one project of Serdany State medicine continue education) was successfully opened at auditorium in Hospital Serdany (with 800 beds). More than 120 medical staff from more than 10 hospitals of the cities in Serdang State attended this training class. First of all, Dr. Shahruniza-Director of trauma and orthopedic department hosted and introduced the experts that would give lectures. After that, Prof. Chen Yongchong lectured with the topic ‘The clinical application of MEBT/MEBO in the treatment of burns, wounds and ulcers’. Then, in the section of questionnaire, participants raised up a ort of questions and Prof. Chen gave detailed and logic reply. At the end of this class, all expressed that they will apply MEBT/MEBO in more clients with burns, wounds, and ulcers as soon as possible.
8. On Oct 19th, hospital-range training class of regenerative medicine was hold at the meeting room of Hospital Kota Bharu. Dr Shawal-Director of Burn and Plasty Center (with four beds) hosted and offered an introduction to the lecturer.
