BEIJING (Mar. 16, 2005) – China Talents, the journal enjoying great reputation in China, has selected ‘2004 China Top Ten Scientific and Technological Talents. Among the ten talents, Prof. Rongxiang Xu, the Present of MEBO International Group and Beijing Rongxiang Regenerative Medicine Institute, received extensive attention and disputation for his announcement of the establishment of regenerative medicine.
In 1996, Rongxiang Xu found the primitive cells for skin organ regeneration—keratin 19 positive expressed epidermis stem cells on the burn wounds. This discovery played a significant role in understanding the mechanisms of skin regeneration and paved the way for exploring laws of regeneration of other organs. With years’ efforts, he established Tissue Organ Regenerative Medicine which gained American patent. It is said that this achievement surpassed the currently leading presumption in the field of global life science, which is to cultivate and transplant embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells, and consequently aroused extensive debate in the field.
On the basis of current achievements of regenerative medicine, Rongxiang Xu declared to the world to replicate 206 tissue organs and transform 66 cancer cell lines within 5 years in 2002. This aroused great disputation again in the field of science and medicine and simultaneously incurred various suspicions and even ridicules one after another.
Facing these disputations and reproaches to his achievements, Rongxiang Xu held a peaceful and quiet attitude without argument or debate. After winning the honor of Scientific and Technological Talent, he said to the media,” Without suspect there will be no discovery and improvement. The academic fields will have hope only when a hundred schools of thought contend.”
Prof. Xu, combining authority and disputation in one, announced ‘The life span of cells inside human body should be at least three hundred years. This is to say, human life can also be three hundred years as long as the life period of tissue organs can achieve three hundred years. The mission of regenerative medicine is to realize the regenerative relay of tissue organs taking the advantage of potential regenerative ability of human cells, so as to prevent and treat diseases as well as ensure human health.
