--A Letter to The New York Times Editor From A Renowned US FDA Clinical Trial Statistician

On December 3rd, 2005, The New York Times released a news entitled ‘Dire wounds, a new face, a glimpse in a mirror’. The news reported a 38-year-old woman’s face was ripped by an aggressive dog when she was unconscious. Shortly after the injury, the woman received partial face transplant conducted by a surgery team, which was led by the head of face and jaw surgery at Amiens University Hospital. Although ethics dilemma existed, this woman was the first person in the world to wear a new face and recovered the functions of speaking and eating, etc.

Mr. Paul Mange Johansen, a renowned FDA clinical trial statistician, wrote a letter to the editor of The New York Times two days later after this news was released. In the letter, he mentioned traditional Chinese salves, such as Moist Exposed Burn Ointment, has successfully treated extensive burns and brought hope for thousands of victims without attendant ethical snags. The full letter is as follows:

To the Editor [New York Times, December 3, 2005]:
News of the first successful facial transplant raises high hopes for a select few, along with thorny ethical dilemmas ("Dire Wounds, a New Face, a Glimpse in a Mirror," December 3, 2005).  There is a larger group of people -- tragic burn victims -- for whom similar hope may also be around the corner, and without the attendant ethical snags.  Traditional Chinese salves, such as Moist Exposed Burn Ointment (MEBO), have been successfully treating massive burns by aiding the body's innate ability to regenerate skin, for nearly two decades.  As we contemplate the ethics of elective face transplants, let us not forget that these treatments have the potential to transform destroyed lives into normal ones, a miracle by any standard of ethics.

We are extremely pleasant to see that with the continuous extension of MEBO technology, which covered all the leading edges of current life science, many conscientious scientists such as Paul were beginning to contact, learn, popularize or even work for MEBO. In the near future, we believe more and more our global colleagues would strive for this revolutionary technology and our thriving future. Let us work together for human’s health.
