The Regenerative Medicine and Therapy Made a Hit in Vietnam
- Report on the 9th Asia-Pacific Burn Congress
On April 3rd 2013, the 9th Asia-Pacific Burn Congress (9th APBC) was held in Hanoi. The Congress attracted nearly 500 people from over 30 countries. The 9th APBC did not only invited famous burn associations and scholars in Asia-Pacific area but also the well-known experts from the International Society for Burn Injuries (ISBI). The congress lasted 3 days and arranged a hundred presentations regarding the latest research and development about burn and plastic treatments. Shu Ye, Director of Foreign Affairs Office of the Chinese Burn Association of the Integration of Traditional and Western Medicine (CBAIM), prepared 4 presentations regarding the Regenerative Medicine and Therapy (RMT), introduced the application of the RMT in burn, plastic, and skin wound treatment. After the 8th APBC in Thailand, the 16th Congress of International Society for Burn Injuries at Edinburgh, and the 21st Annual Conference of National Academy of Burns-India, this is another time that RMT presents at the world’s highest academic platform.

After the opening ceremony and the key-note speech in the first morning, Shu Ye met with burn experts from Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Philippine, Indonesia, and other countries. These experts are experienced in the application of RMT, and are actively promoting RMT in their hospitals. Prof. Burd, an executive committee member of ISBI, is from Hong Kong, currently responsible for the worldwide burn prevention. His proposal about retrospective study of burn data, and its significance and application has been quoted many times in Prof. Gamelli’s speech. When reading the congress schedule, he showed great interest in the research findings about activation of K-19 stem cells with RMT, and hoped to listen and see the relevant research date immediately. Prof. Burd has been an old friend to MEBO, who shows concerns and provides support to MEBO’s development. In 2012, Prof. Burd and President Sun chaired the MEBO symposium at the 16th Congress of International Society for Burn Injuries at Edinburgh. In addition, Prof. Rajeev, Secretary General of ISBI, met with MEBO Team at the 21st Annual Conference of National Academy of Burns-India, learned about RMT for the first time, during break of this meeting, he asked about MEBO’s registration at India, hoped to get further knowledge about RMT and its application in China to officially introduce RMT to India and benefit the Indians.

Moreover, RMT experts with rich experience in regenerative medical technology such as Prof. Salina, Prof. Teddy, Prof. Dong-Chul Kim and Dr. Sy paid close attention to MEBO development. Prof. Dong-Chul Kim from Korea is the Vice-Chairman of Korea Burn Association, early in 2002, he had a short encounter with Prof. Xu, and was deeply impressed, he was shocked by the fact that Prof. Xu already applied RMT to whole body. Today, he wanted to be informed about latest development of MEBO RMT periodically. Prof. Teddy is a famous Indonesian plastic surgeon who met with Shu Ye and discussed about clinical application and research about MEBO. He expressed wishes for future collaboration. Prof. Salina attended China Burn Congress as early as in 2010 who gave two presentations about RMT. His student Dr. Shah has turned into the backbone of their hospital, and has been promoting RMT in Malaysia with all efforts and preparing for another upcoming Wound Congress in Indonesia this June.

In the afternoon, Shu Ye made a 30-minute simple and clear introduction about the mechanism of RMT in treating extensive burns and scars. The treatment effects of RMT moved all the audiences who were trying to record the case pictures with their digital equipment. This is especially true with Vietnam experts, because it is the first time they learn about MEBO. As the seminar chair, Prof. Nguyen Nhu LAM, the director of Vietnam National Burn Center, nodded his head constantly to show approval. After detailed discussion, it turned out that he has learned about MEBO a long time ago, and wished to see the completion of MEBO’s registration in Vietnam as soon as possible, and to use RMT in his hospital at the earliest opportunity. Certainly, this presentation also attracted experts from other countries and areas such as Taiwan, they all showed great interest to RMT.

As mentioned by Prof. Le Nam (Chairman of Vietnam Burn Association) in his speech themed as “Latest Development of Burn Treatment and Plastic Surgery” in Vietnam, there are about 600,000 – 800,000 burn patients in Vietnam each year, accounting for 1% of the total population. About 18,000 – 20,000 patients require treatment in hospital. In 2012, MEBO International Groups started the drug registration for MEBO Burn Ointment in Vietnam. With collaboration and efforts, the registration went on smoothly. We are convinced that the registration will complete in success, and the Vietnamese will benefit greatly from RMT.
Please come back for more reports about this Congress.
