The General Hospital of Philippine University has sent her second burns expert to China to learn regenerative medicine (I)

In the rainy afternoon of July 4th in Guangdong China, the official activities of academic exchanges, field investigation and visits formally started for the party of Dr. Ferri David Paloyo, expert of burns and plastic surgery of the General Hospital of Philippine University and her assistant Dr. Marian Desiderio and Ms. Daisy Wang, technical supporter of the Chinese Burns Association of the Integration of Traditional and Western Medicine (CBAIM).

This academic activity of field investigation and learning is the second with much more academic meaning following last year’s visit of Dr. Glenn President of Philippine Burn Association and his assistant Dr. Cruz, Dr. Zheng Qiming. Since the first visit last year, with the professional guidance of Prof. Chen of CBAIM, regenerative medicine and therapy has received extensively clinical application especially in the treatment of large-area burns and multi-subjects, and begun to be used on larger burn wounds. In order to improve treatment results for extensive burns and severe trauma wounds, the General Hospital of Philippine University sent its request to the CBAIM and applied for a second chance of learning the standard principles of treating extensive deep burn wounds. With Prof. Chen’s efforts of arrangements, organization and contact, and combined with hard work of International Department and local hospitals, this activity gets smooth and successful development.

In the morning of July 5th, led by Prof. Wang Hongsheng, deputy head of the institute of CBAIM, Dr. Ferri and her assistant Ms. Marian arrived at the Guangzhou Integrated Hospital of Traditional and Western Medicine for their first stage of learning. After warm reception of the head of hospital Dr. Liu Shuhua and Director Lei Zhen of Burns and Trauma Department, Prof. Wang accompanied them to visit the ICU where two extensive burn patients were newly admitted. In the ICU, Prof. Wang personally demonstrated the procedures of debridement and dressing change for the patients and explained in detail the matters and attention during practices. Then Prof. Wang led them into the operation room and saw the whole surgery process for treating infectious incision wounds after cardiac valve replacement. In the course, Dr. Ferri and her assistant learned every key detail that how to use self-made MEBO gauzes to treat infectious incisions after debridement. Dr. Ferri expressed that with one morning’s visit and learning she acknowledged the marvelous effects of MEBO wound ointment and its abroad application in clinic and further more this academic action would provide her with dependable and standard guidelines in multi-subjects application in Philippine hospitals.

In the afternoon, Dr. Ferri and her party led by Prof. Wang and Chief clinician Dr. Liu visited burned patients admitted in the hospital’s general wards. With doctors’ detailed introduction, the foreign delegation carefully examined the situation of the burned patients, including adults and children in different stages of their treatment. Comparatively and typically they got acknowledged the results of different treatment stage and the clinical results of comprehensive prevention of scar formation after the wounds were healed. Dr. Ferri expressed more than once that even though she had no doubts about the marvelous effects of Chinese regenerative medicine, when she came to China and personally saw and practiced she was shocked and subdued to what she experienced by herself.

In the following days, Dr. Ferri and her party with the company of Prof. Wang and other medical care staff visited the two extensive burn patients in the ICU every morning and extensively examined their conditions and treatment process. After examination of new results of hemogram and biochemical tests, basal body temperature, respirations and other physical signs of the patient, Dr. Ferri systematically learned the methods of using regenerative medicine and technique on treatment of extensive burns from the doctors, including key techniques of thinning eschar of III degree burns, windowing and draining, standard dressing change for local wounds as well as principles of antibiotics application. During the whole process of studies, Dr. Ferri carefully examined and learned, further more she took notes of every key point of treatment including photo records. Besides, Dr. Ferri had practices together with the doctors to do wound management, windowing and drainage on the deep burn wounds. When she successfully windowed and found a site of empyema under the necrosis layer, both she and the teaching doctors felt extremely excited and gratified. More important, the solid and experienced basic skills during her practice were highly recommended by all the teaching doctors.

Although suffering great tiredness during the study in the ICU, Dr. Ferri never stopped her daily visits to the general wards to examine patients’ conditions. With the standard and professional treatment of regenerative medicine by doctors, the before-admitted burned patients got recovery and were discharged one after another. And newly burned patients were admitted continuously in the hospital. Among these, one newly admitted patient with hot crash injury would help Dr. Ferri strengthen her acknowledge, understanding and mastering of the application of regenerative medicine and technique in multi-subjects medical fields. And it is believed that in the following two weeks, Dr. Ferri will get more comprehensive understanding of the theory, research and clinical application of regenerative medicine and technique.

On August 8th, the academic seminar titled as The Application of Regenerative Medicine and Technique on Burn and Trauma Wounds, classified as the national continuing education project was successfully held in the conference room of Guangzhou Integrated Hospital of Traditional and Western Medicine. Dr. Ferri was invited to attend this conference and make a speech for the audience about her comprehension of regenerative medicine learning in the hospital. Her speech received great population and warm applause from the participants. After that, Dr. Ferri was invited to visit the Huangpu People’s Hospital in Zhongshan City of Guangzhou. Director He Renliang of Burn and Trauma Department guided the visitors to the wards for scene investigation and academic exchanges. They were warmly received by the General Secretary Chen Kai of Zhongshan Association of Clinicians, General Secretary Zhou Huakuo, and Director Wei of the municipal health bureau, who hoped they could learn well from this activity and bring the advanced regenerative medicine and technique they learned in China back to their mother country to benefit their burn and trauma sufferers.

Many thanks to Ms. Daisy Wang, technical supporter of CBAIM for her professional interpreting services to this academic activity. At last, let’s cite Dr. Ferris’s moving speech to end the report for the first stage of their study: My only wish for this visit is to learn and accumulate medical experience and as yet I never feel any disappointed. I strongly believe that when I finish my two weeks’ study here and get to leave, in the crowd that I send my farewell there will be the patient whom has been treated by you and me. (To be continued)

A pleasant morning to all of you. It is a pleasure and great honor for me to be given a chance ti address you here today.

To all of you who do not know me, I am a Burn and Plastic Surgeon from the Philippines. To those who do, I am that lady in the corner of the dining hall who still struggles with using her chopsticks. I came to this beautiful country 4 days ago after receiving a very kind invitation from the MEBO group to experience first-hand the progress they have made in the field of regenerative medicine.

As a doctor who has been working with burn patients for the past several years, I am fully cognizant of the challenge that the condition still poses both physically and psychologically to the patient—this despite the considerable advances made in the field of standard medicine. I have experienced the frustration of seeing patients alive but significantly debilitated long after suffering from major injuries. To say that I was curious about the results you have obtained with the use of MEBO is putting it mildly-perhaps excited was a better term for it. Cautious, yes, but excited nonetheless.

So I came here armed with nothing but hope for a fulfilling learning experience, and so far I have yet to be disappointed. First-hand, I have seen veritable successes in a number of cases. But more importantly, I have also seen its application where it matters most: in that of a severely injured patient. While this case remains a work in progress, the confidence in the treatment that I have seen in Professor Wang and his team has become infectious. Now, I too am confident that by the time I depart this country in two weeks, our patient would be one of those who will wave good bye to me.
My father used to tell me that the liberated mind knows little fear, especially fear of the unknown, for he keeps pushing the unknown farther and farther into the horizon. It is indeed an honor to be learning from great minds who apparently have never even given a thought to such a thing as ‘unknown’.

Bur while I look forward to continue learning about regenerative medicine in the coming days, I know that the richness of my experience here in China will come not only from this, but more so from the opportunity to bear witness to such a vibrant culture and the memorable encounters I have made with such hospitable and very gracious people. For all these and more, words will never justly convey my gratitude.

To all of you, again, a very pleasant morning.

Thank you very much.

Dr. Ferri David Paloyo
