A Historic Handshake——The visiting of German expert on molecular biology

On the evening of Nov.3, 2003, Professor Burghardt Wittig coming from the Institute of Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics in the Free University, Berlin called on Professor Rongxiang Xu, the famous specialist in regenerative medicine in China.

As early as in the period from 1983 to 1989, Burghardt Wittig obtained the top scholarship—"Professor Heisenburg" scholarship awarded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. He has been engaged as the visiting professor by many universities and institutes worldwide, such as WEIZMANN in Israel, ERATO in Japan and MIT in the USA. Professor Wittig obtained the position as "Freien Universit?t Berlin Au?erplanm??igen Professor" in 1989 and was promoted as a C4-professor (the top-rank professor in Germany). His research programs—"Special Research Field" and "Key Program", are supported by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Also, his work was supported by grants from the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, Volkswagen Funds and Chemical Industry Society.

Professor Wittig's successful work and basic research were confined to the following three areas: control of gene expression in the level of chromosomes, bioinformatics and signal transduction. As an elitist in modern molecular biology, he has published over 30 scientific articles in many famous journals since 1979, such as Science, Cell, Nature, PNAS and EMBO. He was twice nominated as the winner of Nobel Prize.

This is Professor Wittig's first visiting to China. From his friends, he heard about Professor Rongxiang Xu, the famous specialist in regenerative medicine in China, and his "Burns Regenerative Therapy". After reviewing the website, he became much interested in Dr. Xu and MEBO based on his acute inspiration in science. Abundant information about scientific research in advanced regenerative medicine and successful clinical results of Burns Regenerative Therapy further brought him the strong desire of visiting Professor Xu. Thereupon, recommended by his friend, he visited Professor Rongxiang Xu in Professor Xu's office (Beijing Grand Hotel) on the evening of Nov.3 in 2003.

First, Professor Xu introduced the great breakthrough and contributions gained by his group in foundational research work and clinic treatment of regenerative medicine.

In order to let the guest understand the meaning of regeneration medical theory, Professor Xu first explained several key conceptions including tissue organ, in situ and regenerative substances.

Professor Xu said that in his research, the whole human body was divided into 206 functional units that were named as tissue organ. Hearing this the German professor showed great passion. For in their research work they also divided the body according to the functions, which was consistent with the theory of Professor Xu. Even the quantity of the organs divided by the German professor was almost similar to that of Professor Xu.

When referring to the two conceptions, in situ and regenerative substance, Professor Xu and the German professor both said that they should have communicated earlier. Although they were entirely dissimilar in culture, one first paid attention to the exploration of causes then to the results and the other handled things in adverse sequence and got new results by the help of the causes, they happened to have the same view in scientific areas. They were both in the opinion that the optimal mode of whether the regeneration of organ or the cell control of molecule biology was carried out in situ. And the German guest approved that the regenerative substance made up of many components was a kind of material or material combination which could activate and maintain the proliferation and differentiation of organ cells and could form new tissue or tissue organ. The character of the regenerative substance was that it only could work in the process of life regeneration.

Then Professor Xu introduced his theory and new progress of regenerative medicine.

It’s well known that Xu’s regenerative medicine came from the clinical practice of skin regenerative therapy (MEBT/MEBO). From there, he and his team observed the regenerative phenomena, and then revealed the general law of human body tissue organ regeneration after 15 years of basic research and clinical practice. “The human body life relies on the continuous proliferation of potential regenerative cells (a special type of tissue cell). They take place of the apoptosis or destroyed tissues and cells to make sure the normal structure and function of tissue organ. The potential regenerative cells in human body came from the primitive multi-potential stem cells in all development and formation periods of tissue/organs. These cells involve in the formation of tissue organs as normal cells. When the tissue organ is destroyed, degraded or came into apoptosis, these potential regenerative cells are initialed to regenerate new cells in order to make sure the full function of tissue/organs.” Xu said, “Besides the skin regeneration, we have successfully finished several tissue organ’s regeneration, such as gastrointestinal mucosa, bone marrow, pancreas, renal tissue, heart muscle, etc. Prof. Wittig was impressed by these entirely truth and results, he said, “I believe you will win Nobel Price due to your contribution of burn therapy!”

After a short time dinner, we continued the meeting with high interesting. This time, Prof. Wittig introduced his work about IMOBarrier-II/III. The IMOBarrier is a kind of immunomodulator, which can super activate the congenital immune system through diffusion of the cytokines. Cytokines can induce immunoreaction to epidemics of the threatened cells within the body through production of defensive molecular weapons. Besides, it can increase the amount of antibodies and phagocytes like monocytes, macrophages and antigen submitting cells inside of the body to build up a front against pathogens. In brief, Professor Wittig has successfully set up a series of methods and carrier system to transfer signal of what was needed to the cell or even into the nucleus. Replication taken place in the patient will yield great amount of the needed material to prevent the disease.

One of the most important and precious point of this meeting is that Professor Xu and Professor Wittig share great similarity in their academic insights which may be most surprising for them who are carrying on different research in different areas, separated by great distance and have never seen each other. They consent with each other mainly in the following aspects:

1) Agreement in the concept of “in situ”. Both of them hold the idea that to repair the impaired cells and tissues in situ is the essential way to solve the problems and treat diseases. Only in this way can we achieve life regeneration in its real sense.

2)Agreement in the potential of the human body. Professor Xu always advocates the rehabilitation way of treatment which follows the law of life to initiate the potential ability of the human body; while Professor Wittig holds the idea that only materials produced within the patient himself will be recognized and used by the human body. The natural “preventive vaccine” is more direct and will produce less interference with the immune system as compared with other kind of vaccines or methods of implantation.

3)Agreement in the time and site specific regulation. Both of the two professors put great emphasis on the time and site specificity for different cells and different regulators to act normally. Improper location or timing will cause disorders or disease.

4) Agreement in the regeneration material of life. Prof. Wittig believe that the regeneration material as presented by Professor Xu has met not only with great approval of experts in Germany, but also provided a meeting point for cooperation in the future.

This is an entirely new talk. One is a well-known expert for burns wounds and life regeneration. The other is a famous molecular biology expert in protein study. Though the two sides focus on totally different topics, they are inter-collected, interdependent and supplemental to each other.

This is also a significant and historical meeting between the “East and West”: one is with a profound understanding of eastern medical philosophy, an expert in life regeneration who adopts a combination of both eastern and western medicines in treating patients, with a principle of following the natural law of life. While the other one is a very famous expert outstanding in western modern molecular biology.

This is rather a talk across internal and external of a cell, a talk between molecular and human body: Prof.Xu’s clinical research from a cell to human body exploded the secret of life regeneration; while, Prof. Wittig found the key to the door of cell study. From the animation simulating film, it’s obvious to feel how profound his basic knowledge is and what an enormous contribution he has made to the field of molecular biology.

Moreover, this is a “handshaking” with a historic importance, and a new era would be started. Through this talk, two strangers have become good friends sharing the same goal. It’s the same ideal of pursuing professional success and the understanding of life which made them come together, despite of any cultural and geographical barrier. Their actions well explained a sentence said by Einstein, that is, there is no boundary in scientific research. We have any reason to believe that, if their cooperation is successful, they will be leading the world.
