The second "Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Commercial Implications for the Pharma and Biotech Industries" conference was held on October 8 and 9, 2002 in San Diego of California. About 100 life scientists who are specialists in the stem cell and regenerative medicine field got together, which not only included the professors from “Harvard Medical School”, “The Salk Institute”, “Stanford University School of Medicine” and other first-class universities; but also senior scientists, CEOs, presidents from “Advanced Cell Technology”, “Centocor”, “Geron”, “Layton”, “PPL Therapeutics” and other famous bio-companies all over the world. More additional, there are some bank investigators, lawyers attended the meeting, and President Bush even sent a council to this meeting.

When we checked in, we got a workbook as usually, which includes contents for this meeting. In which, Prof. Xu’s talk is 1/3 of the whole book (65 pages out of 190). Everyone can see the recognition of this meeting’s producers to MEBO studies on tissue organ regeneration. And also, Prof. Xu is one of the 10 famous life scientists in the field who were invited to give the speech in this conference.

There are two parts in this conference, day one focus on stem cell biology and cell therapy; day two is mainly colony and regenerative medicine. The speakers shared their latest progresses in this field. The Vice President of Geron---David Earp J. D. introduced their studies on embryonic stem cell researches and nuclear transfer since Thomson, they already set up some ES cell lines for cell therapy. Annemarie Moseley from Layton bioscience reported their work on procreation of gene transfer and stem cell therapies, she is an active interface with FDA regarding the commercialization platform for stem cell therapies, but they haven’t reach to the clinical application widely so far. In the field of cell therapy, several professors talked about their researches on neural cell and neural cell therapy, they got some valuable progresses in vitro study while they haven’t got real clinical breakthrough yet. When one scientist asked Prof. Evan Y. Snyder from Harvard Medical School after his talk, “As you said in your talk, when do you think your time table for clinical trial?” he said: “ I would say 2-3 years, and I am not saying the complex disease, such as stroke, I think we will only start from some simple neural system disease, such as only one enzyme’s problem, for this kind of disease, I wound say 2-3 years.” Dieter from the Salk Institute report their study on “Progenitor Cells in the Adult Substantia Neural System”, some of his idea is very close to MEBO prophase idea on tissue organ regeneration in vitro, but he only reach to the point of culture the neural cell in vitro, not saying the tissue or organ. Mr. Michael D. West from Advanced Cell Technology talked about their studies on “Therapeutic cloning and alternative strategies for the production of autologous totipotent stem cells”. He organized and managed the collaboration that studies on the discovery of human embryonic stem and human embryonic germ cells.

There are some scientists such as Naohiro Terada, Tim Brazelton, Jan Wisser put forward that stem cell research and regenerative medicine is in the pioneer field of life science, there are a lot of limitations of some old conceptions need to be changed or expanded. Tim Brazelton from Stanford University School of Medicine published over 20 peer-reviewed research articles, including publications in Science and Cell, as well as numerous commissioned reports and book chapters, then he summarized all these studies together with his group’s research, he believed that the conception of “stem cell” which we are using now is NOT so accurate, he announced their new idea on “stem cells” which expended a lot compared to the old one.

On day two, Prof. Xu, president of MEBO International Group, shared MEBO’s studies on “Tissue organ regeneration in situ or in vitro.” His report covered wide topics from cell biology study, tissue organ model in vitro, tissue organ regeneration in situ and also the big achievements on clinical applications of skin organ regeneration of for 15 years. In 40 minutes, Prof. Xu reported the background, method and materials, procedures and results of the study on regenerative medicine; briefly, the studies has four steps: 1) Studies on seeking the tissue cells in situ of organ which have the potential to regenerate. 2) Taking out these potential regenerative cells to culture in vitro, initiate the proliferation and differentiation of these cells in order to form tissues or organs as same as the ones in situ. 3) Studies on seeking the “Life Regenerative Substances” which are able to initiate, maintain cells to be alive, to proliferate, to different, and to regenerate using the successful procedures and models in vitro. 4) Putting these life substances back into organism to fulfill the organ regeneration or physiologically repair in vivo and in situ. After that, most importantly, he released MEBO’s research progresses and clinical applications in regenerations in situ or in vitro of gastrointestinal mucosa, pancreas, hair follicle, and skin. All these truth made everyone in the meeting very astounded. They were so impressed and exciting about his talk, almost everyone was thinking, “Is this true? Is that simple? Unbelievable! Too good to be true!”

Dr. Ewa Carrier from UCSD cancer center came to Prof. Xu after his talk, she was very exciting about our study, “I think your idea is correct, how did you find the life regeneration substances? I am so impressed by your work, you are on the truck, I mean it! I don’t know how, but you’ve already held the key! That’s the most valuable thing that I heard in this meeting, thank you!”

Yang jing, senior scientist from Centocor told us, “I am very happy seeing our Chinese are doing such a good job here, you lead the regenerative medicine! I am very proud that I am a Chinese!”

Some scientists told Prof. Xu that they knew Prof. Xu and his achievements from media before this conference, they came to the conference just for listening to his report. They were very agree with Prof. Xu’s idea about regenerative medicine, and one scientist talk with Xu, saying that he wants to work for the marrow regeneration together with MEBO.

Almost everyone asked me, “Where we can buy your products? Are they available here in US?” Almost every competitor asked: “How did you find the life regenerative substances for regeneration?” Almost everyone was talking about one topic, “Tissue organ regeneration---MEBO, MEBO-II, MEBO-III…” Even the producer of this conference told us, “If I were to get burn, I will definitely go to see you!”

Prof. Doros Platika, the president of this conference and CEO of Centagentix, joked in the conference, “Basic scientists know everything, but can do nothing; surgeons can do everything, but know nothing; while pathologists know everything, and can do everything, but too late! Only we, regenerative medicine scientists are able to know everything, do everything in time, which will assure the life healthiness and longevity!”

Academically, this conference is very open to the new ideas, new hypothesis, nobody gainsaid other people’s opinions, ideas with his own; everyone had a chance to speak, to talk about his thoughts. All speakers are very famous in this field, but they were all very nice to everyone, not arbitrary at all. Within all these scientists, MEBO is a no-questionable star based on the fulfilled scientific results and clinical applications as the standard. The study on “Tissue organ regeneration in situ or in vitro” not only opened a new way for basic research, but also made many valuable points to the clinical application, which will benefit everyone in the world. On some day in the near future, the dream of live over 100 year will come true.
